New Year, New Post

As you may have noticed, I have been away from my blog and writing for way too long. I was on a very long hiatus, some of it by choice, some of it not by choice and most of it just by circumstances. Most of it was due to personal things going on in my life and not knowing wether it was appropriate or not to write about it, the other part of it was worrying wether it would be used against me for telling my story and the other part was just life keeping me away with kids, school and working, that pretty much filled up my days, as you can imagine. Then all the personal bits of going through a long divorce, helping my kids through it, repairing and rebuilding my life.

I have decided that with the New Year here, this is my opportunity to jump back into something that is positive, is good for me and something that I enjoy doing. I know that I am supposed to be doing this and have made it a priority because there have been too many times where I happen to have free time and just sitting down and wondering what to do or on the computer thinking I should be writing about that particular topic. I didn't because I thought it was too late to jump back in. I also want to get back into writing for freelance jobs.

That's the thing about our mindsets. Once it is made up, there is no changing it. Until the next wave of circumstances happen to wash over us. Then we rise above it and are renewed with different thoughts than what we once had. This is me, all the time.

I know that I have a lot to share and offer. I have my opinions and thoughts about stuff and I have ideas and resources to share. It is my hope that you will help support me in my endeavor by being engaged with me on here by adding your comments, sharing things you find worthy and suggest other things, as well. I know you get the point, so I will stop right there.

It is my goal to post something every day but we know that is not always realistic and possible, so at a minimum of once a week.

It is my intention to post from my heart and mind, my own speaking. I hope that I will have the ability and sense to know just how much to write or post is enough and not too much.

I also want to post and share other links and articles that I feel are worthy of sharing on here.

I know that everything may not be of interest to you and that is okay, it is here to help me, too. This is a daily work in progress.

I am ready and I am doing this, right now!

Currently, while on school break, I am in the process of cleaning out the paper clutter in my office and also making a Vision Board to help me make a good running start to a successful new year. I will be posting my Vision Board, as it comes along. I will be posting tips, tricks and ideas that I am doing to help the process with the paper clutter. I am also trying to grow my photography business in between going to school for a dual degree in Photography and also Graphic Design, which should go nicely with my current degree in Computer Information Technology.

I have not decided how much personal things I want to be writing about. I have been thinking about this for a long, long time now. We all know there are people on Social Media who do not know the boundaries of posting personal information, however at the same time, it could help someone. So what do you suggest? Do you have rules or recommendations on how much is too much? Does a blog have different rules than on Social Media?

Happy New Year! Let's make it a successful, positive and prosperous one!

Colossal Groove - Mistress @ The Webster, Hartford, CT

A short video of Colossal Groove playing in the Battle of the Bands at The Webster in Hartford, CT on Saturday, March 15. I was taking this video for the band and was not able to record the full song or anymore after that because I was unaware that they did not want anyone recording. After one of the security guards came over tell me that, I had to turn it off. Plans are in the works to get more videos for Colossal Groove. In the meantime, enjoy this video.

13 Things You Can Do When Twitter is Down

How to Cope when 'Something is Technically Wrong'...It's an anxiety-provoking moment.

You have your tweet ready to go, your all-important thought to share with the world at large, and Twitter informs you that it's not accepting Tweets. When you're not enthused about seeing the giant Fail Whale sharing the bad news, and feel your excitement waning from the 'Something is technically wrong' message, here are thirteen other things you can do as you wait for the team at Twitter to fix the problem:

1. Write a quick blog post. Your blog, that other online publishing outlet you used to use before Twitter invaded the blogosphere. Elaborate on that 140-character thought and really share your ideas with the world.

2. Do some facial yoga. Bust out some yoga moves that will give those facial muscles a quick workout.

3. Place your order for a Fail Whale t-shirt. Consider it a justified purchase as you continue to play in Twitterville.

4. Check in with WhenTwitterIsDown.com. Helpful advice from this site (push 'refresh' for more insights) include: 'When Twitter is down, yell 'favorite' at attractive strangers,' and the ever so wise strategy, 'When Twitter is down, move on to the next thing.'

5. Clean up your desktop. Delete those extra images, files and other desktop clutter you no longer need and empty out the recycling bin. A quick desktop vacuuming can be very refreshing.

6. Find a new screensaver. Why are you still using that default screensaver? Find a cool and trendy screensaver to keep yourself occupied with some visual acrobats. At least for a few minutes.

7. Browse the Twitter Down Art Collection. This talented graphic designer has created an attractive set of pictures and messages to replace our joyful whale friend.

8. Get some fresh air. If you're in Twitter mode and rearing to go on that tweet, some fresh air could be all you need to keep those creative juices flowing. Step outside, take a quick walk around the block and return to Twitter in a few minutes for an update.

9. Join FriendFeed. If your compulsion to Tweet is getting the best of you, join this growing social community where you can comment, find friends and post your thoughts in real-time just like the good ol' days.

10. Consider sharing your immediate thoughts via video. Seesmic is leading the way in video conversations, encouraging people to show, not tell the world, what they're doing.

11. Give Pownce a whirl. Pownce is another application that makes it easy to share links, files and thoughts with a quick blast from your web browser. There's no character limit with this one, so you're free to micro-blog or write an anthology as you please . Go on, share because you care.

12. Take a power nap. Set the alarm on your phone and enjoy a quick snooze. Right at your desk, if you have to.

13. Call Mom. You know you haven't called her for a while now, so send her a quick message via Skype or communicate the old-fashioned way. Pick up the phone, and enjoy the freedom of no word limits.

So there you have it, thirteen things you can do when there's a Twitter outage. When your Tweet really can't wait, there are plenty of ways to cast that thought into the blogosphere...until Twitter returns.

Martha Stewart: Twitter is better than Facebook

Yesterday, Bill Gates admitted that he has abandoned Facebook because he had too many friend requests and could not tell who he knew and who he didn’t. Now we have another well-known public figure who isn’t very fond of Facebook: Martha Stewart

The master of home décor, in an interview with The Daily Beast, talks up Twitter and describes Facebook as “dippy.” Unlike Gates though, she extensively discusses why Twitter has a special place in her heart. Here’s a little of what she to the Beast:

“I just love it so much more than Facebook … First of all, you don’t have to spend any time on it, and, second of all, you reach a lot more people. And I don’t have to ‘befriend’ and do all that other dippy stuff that they do on Facebook.”

Martha continues to praise Twitter, even calling it “the Wal-Mart of the Internet” (that’s an interesting analogy…). She also stated that the Facebook v. Twitter debate doesn’t matter all that much, specifically because, “they’re all going to be owned by the same company eventually.” The Beast even got a quote from Brandee Barker, Facebook’s Director of Communications, on the subject of Martha Stewart and Facebook:

“I think Martha has built a tremendous fan base and she obviously knows how to use many different ways to communicate with them … I’m a big fan of Martha Stewart and her brand—and I hope she finds more ways to use Facebook.”

Really though, what else could Brandee say that didn’t bash Martha or Twitter?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are Stewart’s words indicative of anything?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While it’s humorous that she calls Twitter the Wal-mart of the Internet (and that she thinks they’ll both be owned by the same company someday), she does bring up some interesting points about how people, especially celebrities, utilize Facebook and Twitter differently. She uses it to get answers to her questions fast, to host giveaways, and even to purposely rattle the cages and to make some buzz, when she asked if Bruno (the movie) was about decorating. Can Facebook really accomplish these things, especially for a celebrity with a massive following?

While it’s true that there’s a competition brewing between FacebookFacebook and TwitterTwitter, we seem to forget that they’re different products that have different purposes. Facebook is about intimate connections and sharing multimedia with a group of friends. Twitter is about broadcasting and spreading your message to the entire world. With that in mind, which platform do you think celebrities require more? There’s a rational set of reasons that explain why celebrities have been cheerleaders for the microblogging startup.

Night Owl Mama; Where are Your Babies When you Get Out of the Car?

Where are Your Babies When you Get Out of the Car?
A Special Thank You to Night Owl Mama for writing this article about leaving children in the car and her tips on preventing this from happening to her and her children, I enjoyed this blog post. I know that we all get busy, but let's keep our heads on.

Where are Your Babies When you Get Out of the Car?
I'm sick to my stomach. I can't believe what I am reading and seeing in the news. Countless times I have seen the news that children are left in carseats or in a seat belt and a parent, caregiver or family member has forgotten to take the child out of the car when they get out. Many of these cases the child is under age 1 and in a rear facing carseat, thus you can't see them. Parents who are forgetting their children are not stung out on drugs or up partying all night. Many of these Parents are educated people. The thought of this terrifies me. We as parents have so much on our minds and are lacking sleep, clear heads and have alot on our plates that we are not taking the extra precautions to make sure that the back seat is empty before walking away from the car.

HERE'S A list of extra pecautionary measures that I take when my children are in the back seat.

~1 I leave my purse in the back seat with them. My Purse is thing 1st I Grab when ever I get out of the car. If I can't find it I look in the back seat.

~2. I put the diaper bag in the front seat. I never have the diaper bag with me unless the baby is with me.

~3. I leave my coat in the back seat. In the winter driving with my coat on always bothers me. SO I take it off after the car warms up and put it in the back seat. Getting out the car I'm going to freeze my butt off so I reach in the back to get my coat.

~4. Back when I used to drop my son off at daycare their policy was to call if I was more than a half hour late from dropping him off. This will prevent accidentally not dropping a child off.

How we can all help by being Nosey. Look in cars as you walk through parking lots. See an infant seat take a walk by and look. Children are not to be left in a car unattended under 6 without the supervision of a person who is 12 years of age or older. See a child or children alone in a vehicle call the authority's.

Cars left in the Hot sun can reach inside temperatures up to 140 degree's. No one could survive that. I like to put up Sun visors and crack the windows when I get out. To keep the car and inside seats cooler. That's for me when I return. If you get yourself into a routine we can make sure that this doesn't happen to us or others.

Tweeting from the Womb...

This is pretty weird. I support technology, but this idea is just ridiculous. If you are going to "tweet", then why not actually "tweet" it?How much do these devices cost? The only good thing I can see is that instead of sitting in front of the computer saying "I am giving baby a bath", you are ACTUALLY doing that and transmitting it.Other than that, I think it is silly.

Unborn babies can now use Twitter

No you didn't read that wrong, unborn babies can now send Tweets from the womb. Creepy sounding isn't it?After you get past the initial "ick" factor of this, it's not that disturbing... actually it's quite interesting but, do you think Tweeting from the womb is taking social media too far? Tell us.Corey Menscher, an NYU student, has developed a suite of devices entitled "The Honeycomb", the first of which is "The Kickbee".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiUq-iMQy7E&feature=player_embedded

The Kickbee allows physically separated spouses to connect with one another by transmitting fragments of sensory experiences of prototypical parenting activities from various stages of babyhood. In order to pass long the information, The Kickbee utilizes the popular microblogging service Twitter as a platform to record and distribute “kicks” to fathers as mobile phone text messages, thanks to its publicly available Application Programming Interface (API).

In layman’s terms: Whenever your kiddo kicks... you get a Tweet about it.

On the technical side of things, a series of vibration sensors are attached to the belt longitudinally so their sensing areas can register the vibrations within the torso generated by a third-trimester baby. A microcontroller receives these signals, performs software filtering and processing, and transmits validated “kick” signals wirelessly to a custom Java application running on a personal computer.

Personally, back when my wife was pregnant (my son was born January 15, 2009) I would call my wife several times a day for general check-ins to see if the baby had been kicking much. I always enjoyed hearing about it, as it helped ease my worrisome mind, I guess.

I'm not saying that we would've used this product, but it would've been nice knowing when the baby was kicking.

As I mentioned above The Honeycomb also has two other stages, they are "The Burpbee" and "The Bathbee". Judging by the names you can probably tell what they're about.

The Burpbee transmits the warmth of a baby’s body on one parent’s shoulder to the other over a distance. It consists of two objects: a “transmitter” in the form of a burp cloth, and a “receiver” in the form of a men’s button-down shirt. The heater warms slowly, and after 30 seconds has reached its peak temperature of about 110º fahrenheitIn layman’s terms: Whenever your kiddo is burping... your shoulder area gets hot, as if you're the one doing the burping.

The Bathbee is an olfactory bathtime awareness device for a parent who is away from home. It consists of two objects: a “transmitter” in the form of a rubber ducky bath toy, and a “receiver” in the form of a rubber ducky-themed children’s lunchbox. When the bath toy is being actively played with in a bathtub, it transmits the smells of bathtime over a distance by filling the room with the scent of baby oil.

In layman’s terms: Whenever your kiddo is getting a bath... your room begins to smell of baby oil.

I can see the allure of The Kickbee... but the other two are kind of a stretch in my opinion.

What are your thoughts on The Kickbee and the other Honeycomb devices - Creepy or Innovative?

Do You Have Bad Facebook Manners?

Do You Have Bad Facebook Manners?

Eight Gifts that Cost Nothing

I figured with Mother's Day coming up, I would share this with everyone. It seems every holiday has turned into about spending money. I used to be asked what do I want for ____ Holiday. My answer has always been: I want us to be happy in life...and still do.
That's it, no hidden message.

Eight Gifts that Cost Nothing

1. THE GIFT OF LISTENING.
But you must REALLY listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your response. Just listening.

2. THE GIFT OF AFFECTION.
Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back and handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends.

3. THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER.
Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, 'I love to laugh with you.'

4. THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE.
It can be a simple 'Thanks for the help' note or a full sonnet. A brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life.

5. THE GIFT OF A COMPLIMENT.
A simple and sincere, 'you look great in red,' 'you did a super job' or 'That was a wonderful meal' can make someone's day.

6. THE GIFT OF A FAVOR.
Every day, go out of your way to do something kind.

7. THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE...
There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others.

8. THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION.
The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone, really it's not that hard to say, Hello or Thank You."

New Webcam not all it's cracked up to be...

We went to Best Buy yesterday so that Shawn could get the parts he needed to fix his computer. I have been wanting a webcam and finally got one yesterday.

The problem is that I'm not a loyal shopper and I go where the price is the cheapest. I have blogged about a few of those instances. Getting this webcam is another one of those to add to the list.

The webcam, Dynex brand - a Best Buy generic, was the cheapest by about $20. But it doesn't have much for controls and looks great when you are not recording or taking pictures. As soon as you record a video, everything is delayed by about 10 seconds. This is an important feature that wasn't written on the package and would have to be one of those learn from mistakes circumstances.

As you can see from their website, they really didn't do much with it. This is important people!!! Get with the program Dynex!

I will be packaging this back up and exchange it for something that I should have gotten to begin with.

Again, I didn't save money...I saved $20 for something that doesn't exactly work as intended and now the time and gas to get back there, just to do it right, like I should have to begin with.

But hey, live and learn....and if you're not learning, you're not living! :O)

Twitter + Last.fm = LastfmLoveTweet

LastFM love/twitter mashup

After siging up, any track that you 'love' on lastfm will automatically generate a tweet on Twitter from you that has the track's artist and name, as well as a link to it so your followers can give it a listen.

I actually liked this alot and think it does it's job very well, but due to the number of "comments" I have received from 3-4 people, I have decided to take it off.

Everytime you love a song on last.fm or through the plug-in on Windows Media Player, it would send a tweet saying that you loved a song. I guess this would be alright if you only like one or two songs.

I can see how people would think it was "spammy"...but really? I am a real person who really likes a real song.

Anyways, it's not the end of the world and to please my audience, I have taken it off. Does anyone know of any other type of Twitter + Last.fm apps, widgets, plug-ins, etc? What do you guys use? Why or why not?

Just a little info about LastfmLoveTweet:

  • Who did it?

twitter: @pootytang
lastfm: pootytang

  • Why?

I was tired of seeing hypemachine auto-generating tweets of loved tracks, and not being able to do it with lastfm. So I threw together a little app with ruby and mysql, and then added a simple form to open it up to the people!

Send Me Some Gmail Stickers Already!

Get your Gmail stickers

Thursday, December 04, 2008 3:27 PM

Not too long ago, one of the Gmail engineers broke out her vinyl cutter and made some Gmail m-velope stickers. Pretty soon, they were pasted to our desks, stuck on our laptops, and adorning the walls around the office. Then other people started asking us about them -- first it was just other Googlers. But when a guy I was sitting next to on an airplane asked where he could get a Gmail sticker, we realized other people might like them too.

So we designed some more, and printed up a whole bunch.

There's the standard Gmail m-velope -- dressed up in glitter. One of three bookplate style stickers you can stick on anything from the inside of a favorite book to your laptop or your skateboard. (Trading with friends is encouraged -- we realize the unicorn isn't for everyone.) And there's a sheet of keyboard shortcut stickers intended as a tool to help people learn Gmail's shortcuts. The adhesive is a bit more removable than standard stickiness, so you can take them off once you've trained your fingers.

So how do you get your stickers? We may be all about speedy electronic communication, but this time we're going old school with snail mail. Just send a self-addressed stamped envelope (along with a note if you're so inclined) to:

Send me some Gmail stickers already
P.O. Box 391420
Mountain View, CA 94039-1420

Make sure to include enough postage to return a sticker pack via U.S. mail. It's less than one ounce, so a standard $0.42 stamp will do if you're in the United States; enclose an international reply coupon (IRC) if you're outside of the U.S. And be sure to send your envelope in soon -- one per person please.

*Our lawyers asked us to make sure it was clear that your contact information won't be maintained in any way and these stickers are "void where prohibited and only while supplies last."

according to the email addresses. Wonder why they need so many people on their
staff? More pork, most likely.

The staff of the conservative group, Our Country Deserves Better Committee
www.ourcountrydeservesbetter.com , has put together a database of phone
numbers, fax numbers, and emails for each Senator. See the listing below,
contact the two Senators from your state and if you want, work through the rest
of the list as well. In terms of effectiveness, phone calls and faxes are most
important, followed by emails.
